Offshore Adventure August 2006

Paphos-Kastellorizo to unwind for our Summer holidays.

In August, two Nautimar boats with total 3 crew visited once again the picturesque Greek island of Kastellorizo.  It was the first time that anyone attempted this trip in a boat with crew of only one as the two vboats were manned by only three persons.  A Joker Coaster 650 and a Novamarine HD-7 flawlessly made the 168-mile crossing in 8h30' and made it back after 12 days of stay at a record 5h40'.

Five ports of call in five days and 650 nautical miles
Thirteen boats of 6,10m to 7,80m (five of which were Nautimar boats) made it to Katellorizo. Five of these boats continued on to Tilos via Rhodes. The Nautimar boat "Nautimar I" then made a solo return to Kastellorizo via Simi where it rejoined some remaining boats at Kastellorizo for the return trip.  A 650 nautical mile trip in 5 days, 130 miles of which were solo navigation in open seas made this another "first" for the "Nautimar I" crew.  The demanding trip required average stretches of 130 n.m. with average 8 hours of fast cruising each day.

Summer holidays for the ultimate place for relaxation
In August 2005 two Novamarine boats ventured out to Kastellorizo to see the island with a different scope than when it is usually seen: in August.  It was full of life and people, yet very tranquil.  A crew of 2 on an RH580 with a 140hp engine and 3 crew (one female) on an HD-7 with a 200hp engine made the trip in 6 hours to return in 5 hours and 50 minutes.  These times were the FASTEST times (excluding resting stops) ever made on this trip.  A total combined trip of less than 12 hours is a RECORD.  All 5 participants spent one whole week in the excellent weather that prevailed all through the week.

Venturingn out with the RIB Club for the annual tradition.
The June 2005 trip was probably the most populated.  13 Boats started with full crews including more women in the crews this time.  The rough sea and the fact that some of the crews were not used to these conditions forced 3 boats to turn back after about 30+ miles into the trip.  The rest of the pack continued in really harsh conditions and 11 hours later they were in Kastellorizo harbour.  Fun times and a good sea at the return marked this venture.  Again, Nautimar had at least 3 boats in this event. Actually, they were the 3 biggest in this event: a 780 and two 750’s.  Two of our boats were also the only ones with twin engines—the first twin engine boat participations in these challenges ever—both, Nautimar boats.

Offshore Adventure May 2004

Kastellorizo May 2004
A Club venture to meet with Greeks clubs in a symbolic trip.
The 2004 event to Kastellorizo was entirely different.  40+ other RIB’s from Greece came to Kastellorizo in a symbolic gesture to link this remote Greek island with the rest of mainland Greece.  The event was organised by the Nautilus Club of Athens in collaboration with the Pan-Cretan RIB club and in this the Kos and Rhodes clubs participated.  Of course, the club KYSIFFOS (which Nautimar was a founder member) was invited to join from Cyprus as it is highly respected for the Annual Crossing to Greece—a feat admired by Greeks RIB owners as this is the longest offshore crossing performed.  During this symbolic and indeed very nice event Nautimar had 5 RIB’s and a Key Largo 25 which is a GRP boat built Sessa Marine, Italy’s top-notch builder of GRP cruisers which indeed impressed.  Again, 3 out of the 6 boats that participated represented Nautimar.  It is important to say that KYSIFFOS became affiliated with Athens’ Nautilus club in a nice, humble ceremony hosted by the mayor of this remote but very Greek island where plaques were exchanged with a promise to repeat this next year.

Kastellorizo June 2003
A Club trip for the annual ritual visit. A sort of Homecoming.
Trips to Kastellorizo now a breeze.  A conditioning trip to Kastellorizo took place in June 2003 when four boats participated.  Nautimar had a lineup of 3 boats: A Sacs 680 Ghost with a Mercury OptiMAX 200 hp, Sacs 750 Madras with a Mariner OptiMAX 225 hp and a Joker Clubman 24 with a Yamaha 225hp.  Their short stay at Kastellorizo was a joy and so was the trip which took place in really calm waters but returned in a Force 5.

Astipalea 2001
Astipalea and nearby islands in an intense marathon trip.

No challenge is too big for our daredevil team!  A 1.000-mile trip to ASTIPALEA.  In July 2001 a group of 5 Rigid Inflatable Boats (4 of which were supplied by Nautimar) left Paphos for a 10-day round trip to Astipalea via Kastellorizo, Rhodes, Simi etc.  The sea faring group encountered seas ranging from choppy to wavy with sea states reaching 7BF!  “It has been the most adventurous experience of all the trips that we organized” said Agis Prastitis, leader of the pack and Nautimar partner back then.

Offshore Adventure Sept 2000

Kastellorizo Sept 2001
A repeat in the same year just because relaxation is a good thing!
After 2 such successful attempts, trips to Kastellorizo are now common.  A conditioning trip to Kastellorizo took place in September 2000 when two boats participated.  A Sacs Ghost 680 with a Mercury Optimax 200 hp along with another inflatable made up the team.  Their short stay at Kastellorizo was a joy and so was the trip which took place in relatively calm waters.

Simi
The Simi Challenge. 600 miles of trouble-free cruising in the second attempt.
Our boats do it again!  In 2000 we have done an offshore trip to the Greek Islands of Kastellorizo and once to Rhodes & Simi with Rigid Inflatable Boats. The first ever trip to Kastellorizo, Rhodes & Simi included 4 RIBs as follows: - Sacs S-750 Madras with Mercury 225 hp, - Sacs S-560 iT with Yamaha 115 hp, - Joker Boat Coaster 580 with Yamaha 115 hp, - Joker Boat Clubman 20’ with Mariner 150 hp.  All boats performed perfectly even though in some cases they had to negotiate high seas of Force 5-6 with 3-meter high waves and gusting winds of 35+ knots.

Offshore Adventure June 1999

Kastel first
The first ever attempt for such a long crossing was Nautimar's initiative.
Nautimar first organized a leisure trip by Rigid Inflatable Boats from Cyprus to Kastellorizo, a 170-mile open sea crossing in June 1999.  Four Rigid Inflatable Boats participated, three of which were supplied by Nautimar.  These were a Joker Boat Clubman 20’ with an 150hp Evinrude O/B, a Joker Boat Coaster 580 with a 115hp Yamaha “Tuna” O/B and a Sacs 560iT with a 115hp Yamaha O/B.  In fact, our Sacs 560iT with its 115hp engine is probably the smallest boat that dared to make this crossing which usually has a permanent Force 4-5. The record still stands.  This event was a Nautimar First, which shows that  we dare to test our boats to their limits and prove that our R.I.B.’s are capable to do better and faster what larger yachts rarely do.  More events followed this successful one till today.
